Benue is a state in the mid-belt area of Nigeria with a populace of around 4,253,641, its capital at Makurdi. The dominant language is Idoma and Tiv. There are other ethnic groups like, Igede, Nyifon,Hausa, Akweya,Abakwa, Jukun,and Etulo. Benue State is named after the Benue River and was formed from the previous Benue-Plateau State in 1976, alongside Igala and some part of Kwara State. In 1991 a part of Benue state (for the most part Igala territory), alongside regions in Kwara State, were cut out to wind up the new Kogi State. Hints of Igbo people and tribes are found in the border zones of Ebonyi State and Enugu State.
