Rivers State is one of the 36 states in the federation of Nigeria. As at 2006, the state has a population of 6,000,400, making it the 6th most populated state in the nation. Its capital, Port Harcourt is the biggest city and is financially huge as the focal point of Nigeria's oil industry. Rivers State is bordered on the South by the Atlantic Ocean, toward the North by Imo, Abia and Anambra States, toward the East by Akwa Ibom State and toward the West by Bayelsa and Delta states. It is home to numerous indigenous ethnic groupslike Ikwerre which is a major group, Ibani, Ogba, Ogoni Opobo, Eleme, Okrika, Etche, Engenni and Kalabari
The inland area of the state comprises of tropical rainforest; towards the coast the Niger Delta environment highlights numerous mangrove swamps. Rivers state, named after the numerous streams that fringe its domain, was an Oil's rivers Protectorate from 1885 till 1893, when it turned out to be a Niger Coast Protectorate. In 1900 the area was converged with the contracted domains of the Royal Niger Company to shape the settlement of Southern Nigeria. The state was created in 1967 with the split of the eastern Region of Nigeria. Until 1996 the state contained the land which is presently in Bayelsa.
