Kwara state was created in 1967, by the military government. Gowon broke the four regions that then constituted the Federation of Nigeria into 12 states. At its creation, the state was comprised of the previous Ilorin and Kabba territories of the then Northern Region and was at first named the West Central State yet later changed to "Kwara", a neighborhood name for the River Niger.
