Ondo State was formed in 1976 from the previous Western region, Akure is the state capital. Ondo state has eighteen Local Government Areas (LGAs, the popular ones being Akoko, Akure, Okitipupa, Ondo, and Owo). Most of the state's natives live in urban areas.
